Here at Obzervr, we use certain terminology to describe our features. We’ve compiled a list of the common terms for you to use as a quick reference. Check it out below:

Obzervr Manager |
The Obzervr web portal where users can manage day-to-day operations and configure the business’ workflow. |
Obzervr Capture |
The Obzervr mobile application downloadable to Android, iOS or Windows devices. Users capture data, track equipment and collect samples using Assignments. |
User |
The person using Obzervr Capture or Manager (i.e. a field worker, technician or engineer) |
Assignment |
A job performed at a place by a person. This is also known as Work, Work Order, Safe Work Instructions, etc depending on your organisation terminology. |
Assignment Type |
A job or workflow type. For example, a building & pest inspection, groundwater sampling or a defect assessment. This is also known as Work Template, Work Order Template, etc depending on your organisation terminology. |
Trip |
A group or batch of Work. This can be day or week of Assignments. Trips allow you to submit a Chain of Custody with Samples from more than one Assignment. This is also known as Schedule, etc depending on your organisation terminology. |
Assignment Point |
The location where you perform your Work. This can be a Site, Property or piece of Equipment. Change the labels for the Geolocation Hierarchy in Obzervr Manager (Configuration – General – Label Alias). Also known as Functional Location, Activity Point, Functional Location, Plant Item etc. |
Sync |
Short for Synchronisation. Sync is the process of transferring data collected on the device up to the cloud and vice versa. This is so that your device can operate offline. Initiate sync by pulling down on the Assignments or Trips List screen. Read more here: How to Sync Obzervr Capture |
Laboratory |
The company or place that your Samples are sent to. This is configured in Obzervr Manager. Read more here: Digitise your laboratory sampling using Obzervr Manager |
Samples |
The rock, oil, gas, water, air or noise collected in a Container and sent to a Laboratory for analysis. Read more here: How to use the Sampling workflow on Capture |
Sample Reference Number |
The ID you write on your Containers. This ID is also written on your Sample Submission Form or Chain of Custody. |
Sample Sets |
A Sample Set is a group of Containers with the same Sample Reference Number. |
QC Copy |
A feature used to create Duplicate and Triplicate Sample Sets. Read more here: The difference between Replicate and QC Copy |
Replicate |
A feature used to shortcut copying Sample Sets. |
Chain of Custody (COC) |
The paper document which outlines the Sample Sets collected and is sent to the Laboratory. In Obzervr, we refer to Assignment COCs, Trip COCs and Quick COCs. Read more here: How to create a Quick Chain of Custody |
Electronic Chain of Custody (eCOC) |
The electronic version of the Chain of Custody sent to the laboratory. |
Sample Submission Form |
A simplified paper Chain of Custody used in conjunction with the electronic Chain of Custody to identify Samples sent to a Laboratory. This is sent as an XML file. |
Containers |
Containers can be anything your sample is collected in (i.e. plastic bags, glass vials or clear plastic bottles) that your Laboratory uses to test your samples. Most commonly, Containers are bottles. |
Test Plan |
A document from the Laboratory which specifies the Tables, Suites and Containers so that Samples can be submitted to a Laboratory. The Test Plan is built based on the Laboratory Quote. |
Laboratory Quote |
A pdf document from the Laboratory which specifies the Tables, Suites and Containers so that Samples can be submitted to a Laboratory. The Quote can contain or not container prices. |
Laboratory eQuote |
This is the electronic version of the Laboratory Quote in an xml file format. This can be uploaded to Obzervr Manager to configure the Laboratory. |
Quality Control |
Quality Control can be Blanks, Spikes, Duplicates or Triplicate Samples submitted to a Laboratory in validate the Primary Sample results. Read more here: |
Field Measurements |
Field Measurements is any data collected (i.e. pH, turbidity, drop down menus etc). Read more here: 10 Key Field Measurement Types You Need To Know |
Series |
Series are Field Measurements that are captured repetitively. For example, every time a defect is found on a unit, the same Field Measurements are captured about the defect (i.e. Description, Likelihood and Consequence). Read more here: Series Explained This is also known as Re-occurrences in Work Templates with each repeated work called an Instance. |
Attributes |
Attributes are additional static information about an Assignment Point or Asset. Attributes help to inform Capture users about the Assignment Point they are working at. |
Trip Template |
Trip Templates are a way to create Trips with the same Assignment Types and Assignment Points which can be used repetitively. This might be helpful for a Quarterly Monitoring Round which visits the same places and the same work is performed there. |
Assignment Category |
Assignment Categories are another level to subdivide an Assignment Type (i.e. Inspection, Ad hoc or Monitoring) |
Role-Based Access Control |
The Roles and Permissions a User has in Obzervr Capture and Manager. A User can have Mobile, Web or Both permissions. The User also has Read (view-only) or Admin (edit and create) roles to access sections of Obzervr Manager and Capture. Read more here: Role-based Security Access |
Work Status |
Work Statuses are how a Capture User tells a Manager User how far through an Assignment they are. Some examples are: Assigned, In Progress, Cancel, and Complete. Read more here: The 8 Assignment Statuses Explained |
Equipment |
Tools are equipment you take with you (i.e. Water Quality Meters). Plant & Equipment are located at an Assignment Point. |
Analytics |
The dashboards and visualisations created to display analytics of the data captured in Obzervr. Typically, these are created using Microsoft Power BI. |
